Dragon and Lotus Project
Wellspring collaborated with Vietnamese artists to design and create large sculptures (each dragon being 12 meters long) of two golden dragons and a lotus, appearing to float on Hue’s famous Perfume River throughout this international cultural festival. A large team of artisans and art students proudly helped to create these works, which, being famous Vietnamese symbols, were received enthusiastically across the country.
As a side project, the 23-minute documentary film Here Be Dragons shows that, while sharing the challenges and successes of this arts project, the barriers of language and culture are crossed and international friendships are built. The film, described as ‘a template for any good community development process’, was generously assisted by Vietnam-based British filmmaker Paul Zetter. The film won the Film Networking Industry (FNI) Awards Best Documentary for 2007. Unilever Vietnam was the major Sponsor of the Festival project, with the Australian Embassy in Hanoi providing publicity and assistance with the Hanoi screening for Here Be Dragons.
